AFCON Group E Preview: Mali, Tunisia favourites, tough for debutants Mauritania

2019 Africa Cup of Nations 32nd edition is set to kick off on Friday 21st in Egypt and Futaa takes a look at Group E.

The group entails debutants Angola, Mali, Mauritania and one-time winnersTunisia. It is more of an evenly balanced group but Tunisia, the winners of 2004 tournament, where they were the hosts, remain favourites to top the group.

Who will progress to the next stage?

Tunisia 🇹🇳 

Tunisia won the tournament back in 2004 when they beat Morocco 2-1 in the finals. The Eagles of Carthage have too much experience in all department and playing in North Africa is closer home. Tunisia has an enviable record of qualifying for every final tournament since 1994, 13 finals in the process. Their best record was winning the title on home soil in 2004.

Mali 🇲🇱 

Mali has been a constant force at the final tournament since 2008, winning bronze in 2012 and 2013. The West Africans will be making their seventh appearance on the trot in Egypt. They achieved their best AFCON finish in 1972, losing to Congo in the final.

Angola 🇦🇴 

Angola is back in the finals for the first time since 2013. They made their debut at the 1996 edition hosted in South Africa. Their last eight finish in 2008 & 2010 remains their best record. The Palancas Negras have never previously progressed beyond the quarter-finals stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (2008 and 2010), being eliminated from their group in five of their seven previous appearances, including both of their last two.

Mauritania 🇲🇷 

The debutants have seen their steady rise rewarded with a debut qualification to the final tournament of the flagship African football tournament. They were named Men’s National Team of the Year at the Aiteo CAF Awards last January in Dakar, Senegal.
