Zimbabwe threatens to pull out of AFCON over wage row

Zimbabwe players have threatened to pull out of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt due to unpaid salaries and allowances.

It is reported that the players' camp did not reach an agreement with ZIFA over the arrears, with the organisation offering to pay $5,500 of the $12,500 owed to the players.

In addition, the players say ZIFA owes them $3000 which they are entitled to following their draw in the second match against Uganda.

Consequentially, the players knocked back the offer and threatened to boycott their last group match against DR Congo on Sunday.

"We were called in and told of the developments about the possible withdrawal from the tournament and we told them (ZIFA officials) that we were ready to go home because we believe they haven't fulfilled our contracts," Zimbabwe's Herald newspaper quoted an unnamed player as saying.

Having drawn 1-1 against Uganda, Zimbabwe have a strong chance of qualifying for the next round but will have to beat Congo and pray for favourable results from the other matches.
