Kevin De Bruyne calls for rule change after Manchester City vs Tottenham VAR drama

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has called for more clarity in the new handball rule after Gabriel Jesus was denied a late winner against Tottenham Hotspur.

Pep Guardiola's side thought they had stolen the lead in stoppage time when substitute Gabriel Jesus scored, only for the goal to be disallowed after replays showed that Aymeric Laporte had handled the ball.

A new rule introduced this season means that handballs now do not have to be intentional to be penalized. However, while accidental handballs are penalized for an attacking side the same does not apply for defending teams.

De Bruyne called on the new handball rule to be changed, "I’m old fashioned, I’m not the biggest pro-VAR but I think if you want to make football better you can understand it. I learned after the game that if it hit a Tottenham arm it wouldn’t have been a penalty so I don’t understand it – I don’t understand the law at all – it should be debated.

"If it is going to be disallowed for one team it should be a penalty if it touches someone from Tottenham on the arm. That should be made clear because it's a big rule. It's something new but it should go both ways.

Confusion

"We know it was being reviewed because every goal is reviewed but when he did the sign [to disallow the goal] I didn’t know why and Tottenham didn’t know why. It's strange.

"They made this rule, it's new. When I saw the video, it’s impossible to take his arm away. What can he do, should he chop his arm off and play without?

"There’s nothing he can do because Nico is 10 centimeters in front of him trying to head the ball, you can’t react in that space and amount of time. I understand if you want to bring the rule in but make it clear – handball both sides."
