Manchester United are set to rival neighbours Manchester City for the signature of Benfica starlet Florentino Luis.
The Sun reports that United have sent scouts to watch over the young defensive midfielder before with the latest report being in their recent emphatic 4-0 win over Braga before the international break.
The signature of the 20-Year-old is believed to be stiff with both clubs ready to acquire his services as early as January 2020.
The midfielder is revered in Portugal and the pundits say it is just a matter of time before he is given a call up to the Portuguese national team after an impressive display in the youth set up.
His potential is depicted in his release clause where the Manchester clubs will have to fork a total of £91million if they are to get his services as that is the release clause in his current contract with Benfica.
Promotion to the First Team
Luis' promotion to the first team came in the second half of last season, making his debut on February 10 in Primeira Liga. He played 11 times in the league last season, scoring his first goal against Moreirense in March, as Benfica won the league by two points to Porto.
United are looking for a long replacement of defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic with the Serbian having expressed displeasure at being benched by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The United manager has preferred Scottish midfielder McTominay in place of Matic but he is yet to convince the faithful of Old Trafford and with United expected to spend on players after losing players like midfielder Ander Herrera, Luis may be their next buy.
