After being linked with an £81 move to replace Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window, Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams has confirmed that Manchester United were interested in him.
With Romelu Lukaku joining Inter Milan, United set their sights on Williams to replace the Belgian forward. Williams decided against a move and went on to sign a nine-year deal with the Spanish side despite interest also from fellow Spanish side Real Sociedad.
In an interview with Cadena Ser, Williams confirmed interest from United in the just concluded transfer window, "I had contact from Manchester United but I cannot tell you who it was. “My number one option has always been to stay at Athletic Club and to retire here. Joining Real Sociedad? No, I could never go there. 100%."
After the closure of the transfer window United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed they had considered signing a replacement for Lukaku but could not find the right one.
