Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has insisted Ross Barkley is the club's first-choice penalty taker, despite his miss in the Champions League tie against Valencia.
The Englishman was presented with the chance to pull his side level on the 87th minute, but dragged his shot way above, hitting the crossbar as they lost 1-0.
This came even as his teammates showed concern over his decision to take the penalty, with Jorginho, who is a regular penalty taker for club and country, and Willian all uncomfortable with the Englishman.
Lampard, however, clarified that the 25-year-old is the club's first-choice penalty taker whenever he is on the pitch.
"Ross is the penalty taker. He’s scored a couple in pre-season and he’s been the taker whenever he’s started or come on in games. I don’t know what the conversation was but Willian and Jorginho were the penalty takers from the start and Ross was once he came on," he said after the match.
Jorginho and Willian were visibly angry after the miss, but other players including captain Cezar Azpilicueta showed their support.
The defeat in the opening match of the tournament makes the tricky group even more daunting for the London club, who are now third in the group.
They now shift their focus to the weekend Premier League match against Liverpool.
