Tusker FC picked up their second win of the season after thrashing Sofapaka 3-1 with Luke Namanda being a constant thorn in Batoto Ba Mungu's flesh in a match staged at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Saturday 28th September.
Bouyed by their first wins of the season last time out, both sides were out with the aim of collecting their first back to back wins of the season.
It was Tusker, however, who started brightly and almost opened proceedings inside the first minute when captain of the day Mike Madoya missed his kick after Luke Namanda hurled in a long throw that was flicked onto the former Zoo midfielder.
George Odhiambo produced a contender for miss of the season in the 18th minute when Luke Namanda whipped in a low cross across the face of goal that evaded everyone to find the former Gor Mahia midfielder inside the six-yard box but he could not guide his effort on target with a gaping goal in front of him.
Tusker were gifted a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 32nd minute when George Maelo brought down his namesake Odhiambo inside the box with the referee pointing to the penalty spot.
Timothy Otieno stepped up to take the penalty but he could not hold his nerve as he saw his penalty saved by Isima Watenga as Luke Namanda missed the rebound with his effort landing on the side netting.
Roberto Matano's half time pep talk paid dividends immediately as Tusker took the lead in the 46th minute when former Sofapaka defender Rodgers Aloro struck a sumptuous free-kick that was pushed to the crossbar by Watenga only to land to Madoya who showed Blackberry how to score from an open goal.
Sofapaka conceded a second six minutes later when they struggled to deal with a long throw as Namanda's shot was parried as far as Hilary Wandera who had a simple tap in to bag his first goal of the season.
After an impressive game, Luke Namanda finally had his name of the scoresheet in the 71st minute when David Majak turned George Maelo inside out to fire past Watenga but his effort cannoned off the woodwork to land to Namanda who rifled the ball to the roof of the net.
Sofapaka got their consolation goal in the 93rd minute when Sammy Imbuye's cross was handled by Hilary Wandera as the referee awarded the penalty. Eli Asieche converted his penalty, sending Emery Muvyekure the wrong way.
Tusker next travel to face Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday 6th September while Sofapaka will seek redemption against Bandari.
