Pitso Mosimane has said not anyone can beat Mamelodi Sundowns with four goals, but even Pep Guardiola can take a big loss.
Mosimane’s comments have followed after last Saturday’s hammering from Kaizer Chiefs. Sundowns traveled to Soweto for the Shell Helix Ultra Cup to take a 4-2 hiding.
“Not anyone can score four goals against Mamelodi Sundowns, I don’t know if I lost four before, maybe?,” Mosimane said to Soccer Laduma.
“I don’t remember but it’s okay, it happens to Pep, it happens to Mourinho and other coaches so who am I?” he added.
Pitso’s biggest defeats:
- Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC 4-1 Sundowns
- Sundowns 3-5 Bloemfontein Celtic
- Sundowns 0-5 Bloemfontein Celtic.
The 2018/19 PSL Coach of the Season said his side faced a strong Chiefs team, while fielded fringe players such as Oupa Manyisa, Aubrey Ngoma, Andile Jali, Tokelo Rantie, Sphelele Mkhulise and the young debutant Harold Kaketso Majadibodu at right back.
“For me it was also to check Kaizer Chiefs because they played a very strong team so I need to know where my team is at the moment. There’s a lot of negatives from my team, a lot of work - four goals remember, that’s what I know,” Pitso continued.
The former Bafana Bafana coach revealed the inspiration for his half-time changes. Pitso made three changes to help restore the club’s pride and honour.
At 4-0 during half-time, Mosimane threw in Kennedy Mweene, Anele Ngcongca, Gaston Sirino and Ali Meza.
“All I had to do in the second half was bring the integrity back to the club and to make sure that we are Sundowns, so I said okay, this can be embarrassing and I respect the badge, the team and the Shell Helix Cup and I know people watching at home, my family, my son crying – oh how can you concede four?”
“But we can score 16 also remember so we have to get four sometimes. It’s part of the game we move on and meet again in two weeks,” Mosimane concluded after his side pulled back two goals via Meza and Sirino.
