In July 2017, Kenyan midfielder John Macharia left the country to join Georgian top-flight side Kolkheti Pohti on a one year deal.
Macharia was not only the player beginning his European adventure then as he was joined by another midfielder in Amos Nondi who was in the books of Gor Mahia then; the duo joining defender Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma who had joined the club earlier.
Its two years since and all the players having moved to different teams with Macharia being the latest to ditch the club for league rivals Guria; a club he joined in July this year. Nondi had moved to Dila Gori a year ago with Ouma moving to Sweden with IF Vasalunds.
Speaking to Futaa about his journey in Georgia, the Kenya U20 midfielder said: “It's not been easy here more so with the adaption. I came here when I was young and I had to adapt luckily I found a few Kenyans here and that made it a little bit easier.
“It’s a tough league here and every time you can’t relax because every team is willing to fight to stay in the top flight. I have learned a lot as a player and I believe I can play anywhere now with this experience.
On his ambitions to represent the national team, the former FC Talanta midfielder said he was giving his all to achieve that dream.
“It’s always a pleasure to feature for your country of birth and even after being part of the U20 team, the big dream is always to be on the senior side. I work on that every day and I still believe it’s just a matter of time before I'm given a call-up. Mine is to put it more effort to realize this.”
Since his arrival at Guria, Macharia who won the Secondary School Ball Games football trophy with Laiser Hill has made six appearances and will hope to add to that tally when they take on Gagra in their next game on Wednesday.
Guria is currently placed ninth on the log with 27 points.
