Liverpool 5-5 Arsenal (5-4 on penalties): The Gunners collapse in stoppage time as the Reds advance to quarters

Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup after beating Arsenal 5-4 on penalties, thanks to Curtis Jones' winning-penalty after the match ended 5-5 in regular time.

It was a night for Shkodran Mustafi to forget after gifting Liverpool the lead. However, Torreira netted the leveler for Arsenal before Gabriel Martinelli gave his side a two-goal lead through his brace in a span of ten minutes. Milner pulled one back before half time from the spot-kick. In the second half, Niles scored the fourth goal for the gunners but strikes from Chamberlain and Divock Origi canceled Arsenal's advantage. In the 70th minute, Willock scored a screamer to restore Arsenal's lead which lasted until 94th minute when Origi forced a 5-5 draw.

Liverpool scored all their penalties to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition as Dani Ceballos missed the third penalty.

Arsenal though, they might have played a few youngsters but that wasn't a young backline. Whatever way you look at it, they blew a 4-2 lead and couldn't see out victory with 90 seconds left. It's only the Carabao Cup but it was another bad night for Unai Emery.

Own goal

Liverpool took the lead inside six minutes and was Shkodran Mustafi's own goal. Chamberlain had the ball on the right-wing before delivering a cross and Mustafi put the ball past Martinez as he tried to clear.

In the 19th minute, Arsenal drew level through Torreira. Martinelli who kept the ball alive under pressure on the left before cutting across for Torreira who reacted quickest to stab the rebound in for the equalizer.  Seven minutes later, the Gunners turned the score around as Martinelli beat Liverpool after a switch off.

In the 36th minute, Martinelli scored his second of the night for the Gunners to take a two-goal lead. Williams found Elliott down the right but he hit a poor ball inside which was cut out by Saka. He found Ozil inside the box and the German squared for Martinelli.

Just before halftime, James Milner reduced the deficit, scoring from the spot after Elliott was fouled inside the box.

Arsenal once again extended their lead to two through Maitland-Niles in the 54th minute. Milner, under no pressure, passed the ball back to Kelleher but it's so short that Maitland-Niles got it first. His touch was a bit heavy but Ozil got to the byline, kept the ball in with an outrageous backheel and Maitland-Niles poked in on the line.

Chamberlain screamer

A stunner from Lallana's header, ghosting in behind Maitland-Niles to take the ball away for him before smashing it past Martinez from 25 yards.

Turn around

In the 60th minute, Liverpool were level. What a game! Jones found Origi after a good run from midfield and the forward spun Holding onto his right foot before smashing a shot goalwards which Martinez only palmed into the top corner.

Willock stunner

Absolute madness at Anfield. Willock made a run 20 yards through the Liverpool midfield and unleashed an absolute belter of a shot into the far corner which Kelleher was never getting to.

Stoppage leveler

Brewster kept the ball alive from a cross, debutant Williams got to the byline and swung in a cross, and Origi, on the turn, volleyed into the bottom corner.
