Motema Pembe eliminated Gor Mahia out of the CAF Confederations Cup after registering a 2-1 win over the Kenyan giants in a clash staged at the Stade des Martyrs-Kinshasa on Sunday 3 November.
Unexpectedly, Gor Mahia started the game the better team and deservingly went into the lead on the quarter-hour mark when defender Wellington Ochieng rose above the home side defence to tower in a Kenneth Muguna corner.
The Steve Pollack coached side had another golden opportunity to double their lead in the 26th minute following a quick counter-attack, but Ivorian Yikpe, after being laid by Nicholas Kipkurui was to stumble on the tough to allow award the opposition keeper with an easy gather.
Pembe were growing in the game and backed by their vociferous fans, they were proving too much for Gor to handle and after missing a series of chances, they were to restore parity in the additional minutes of the first half through Vinny Bongonga; the player tapping in an empty net after the visitors defense had failed to clear a parried ball by keeper Mapigano.
Motema was to take the lead in the 66th minute after some pressure from the home side and despite some late changes from Pollack, they couldn't get the needed goal to see them through.
Gor now joins Bandari out of the Confederations Cup as the latter bowed out at the expense of Guinea's Horoya AC.
