Sacked Arsenal boss Unai Emery was approached about the Everton job, Sky Sports News reports.
An informal meeting was held in London and it is thought Emery wants more time to think about his next move following his dismissal with Everton looking to replace Marco Silva who was shown the door last week.
Sky reports that Emery feels he can still hack it in the English Premier League with Spain and Italy being his other possible destination.
Apart from Emery, Everton former boss David Moyes has been linked with the vacant position but Shanghai SIPG boss Vitor Pereira is believed to top the board's list. It is believed that troubled Napoli SC boss Carlo Ancelotti is among those being considered for the job too.
Should Emery sign the Everton deal, he will make Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha is a top priority after failing to lure him to the Emirates over last summer.
Apart from Zaha, Emery is believed to have enquired about the availability of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey but he felt the former was expensive.
