For the first time in the history of the UEFA Champions League, the knockout stage will be contested by teams from Europe's top five leagues, (England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France).
This follows Atletico Madrid and Atalanta's progression on Wednesday night, filling the last two spots.
Atalanta pulled one of the most remarkable qualification campaigns, winning their last match 3-0 away to Shakhtar Donetsk to book a place in the knockout phase.
The Italians lost three of their opening group matches but recovered to draw their fourth at home to Manchester City, before two wins on the bounce against Dinamo Zagreb and the Ukrainian side to book a place in the next round.
By doing so, Atalanta matched Newcastle's record of losing their first three games in the group stage and progress, even though the Italians depended on luck from the other matches on the night.
