South Africa U-20 Women's national team cruised to a 2-0 win over Zambia away in Lusaka to put themselves in an advantageous spot heading into the second leg of their 2020 Costa Rica/Panama World Cup preliminary round qualifier against Zambia.
Coach Charles Haalubono named a new-look starting line up handing Nkwazi Queens of Towela Nkhata and Xiomela Mapepa starting berths in midfield and on the wing respectively.
South Africa looked the more organized from the onset and just needed eight minutes to take the lead as Chelsea Joy Daniels beat Anna Mukumbuta with easy after the Zambia goalkeeper moved way off her line.
South Africa continued to press and was looking for a second goal, Zambia on the other hand was still failing to string passes together with Xiomela Mapepa losing possession too often, Maylan Mulenga isolated and Towera Nkhata and Katongo Evarine in the middle failing to find the defense splitting passes.
South Africa doubled the lead seven minutes to half time, Thubelihle Shimase with a free header to make it 2-0 heading home a Chelsea Joy Daniels cross.
Coach Haalubono decided to make a first-half substitute withdrawing Mapepa and introducing Regina Chanda and Zambia seemed to have become a little more stable towards the end of the first half.
In the second half, Zambia came back with a little more purpose and started to put pressure on Batsesana.
Red Arrows ladies forward Ochumba Oseke was introduced 15 minutes into the second half replacing Towera Nkhata. The Oseke and Maylan Mulenga partnership came to life towards the end of the match with Katongo finally finding those spaces but it was a little too late, 2-0 the match ended.
The return leg will be played in South Africa on the weekend of January 31 to February 2 with the winner over two legs taking on either Namibia or Botswana in the next round.
