Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has backed Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to remain his number one ahead of Itumeleng Khune.
Akpeyi endured some blushes last weekend when his blunder helped Maritzburg United to take a 1-0 lead before eventually losing the game.
With the club’s and Bafana Bafana hugely popular keeper Khune now fully recovered from injury, the club’s supporters and media have pressured the coach to drop Akpeyi.
“I know it’s something that the entire country is looking into [that Khune must start ahead of Daniel Akpeyi],” Middendorp said to KickOff.
“This one must play, this one must play but are you really convinced that our goalkeeping coaching department is not able to see what’s going on and when the time is right? Are you really thinking we just do because whatever?” Middendorp added.
Chiefs next take on Highlands Park in the Nedbank Cup last 16 game where Khune is the competition’s designated choice.
