Juan Mata: This is why David Moyes was sacked

Manchester United star Juan Mata has revealed that former manager David Moyes had to go after failing to bring positive results at the club.

The Spaniard also expressed his sadness at the Scot’s reign, with the West Ham manager lasting just 10 months in charge of the club.

United appointed Moyes as Ferguson’s replacement in 2013, convinced that he could continue his compatriot’s legacy at Old Trafford.

Moyes started life at Old Trafford brilliantly winning the Community Shield. But he could not maintain the standards and after a poor string of results, he was sacked 10 months later.

Mata has now admitted that Moyes ‘had to go’ but revealed his sadness at how things worked out for the current West Ham manager.

“I always feel bad when a manager has to go. Because it means that you are not doing right, or you are not getting results. So it's not a nice feeling. So, unfortunately, he had to go,” Mata told the club’s official website.

“But of course, I'm very thankful to him.”

Mata also admitted he was amazed at how United fans reacted to the players when they embarked on the lap of honour at the end of that nightmare campaign.

“What I remember the most about that season was in the last game,” he continued.

“Ryan Giggs was our caretaker manager at that time, and we always do the ‘lap of honour’, let's say. You say 'thank you' and 'goodbye and see you next season'.

“I was very afraid of that, because we were seventh in the league, a position Man United should never be, so I was like: we're going to wave and they're going to boo us back, they're going to insult and they're going to be like they should feel, because I understand that.

“I came from Spain and I know how things can turn difficult when the team is not performing."
