Manchester United defender Phil Jones has picked the 2013 Champions League tie against Real Madrid as his most memorable match for the club.

The former England international was part of the team that faced the Spanish giants at Santiago Bernabeu in the last-16, first-leg tie, in February 2013.

He was slotted in midfield alongside Michael Carrick and performed well despite the pressure that came with the fixture.

“It was a really big game for me. Playing against Madrid, in the Bernabeu,” Jones said during an interview with the club's official website.

“I played center-midfield alongside Michael Carrick. There was a lot of hype about Ronaldo in that game, but we limited him to a few chances and we got a good 1-1 result at the Bernabeu before we lost in the home leg [and were eliminated].

“It was incredible: the stadium, the atmosphere. It was a mad game and one that flashes by at the time. You only really take note of it a few years down the line," he added.

Jones has largely played as a defender, but he explains why he felt comfortable playing in the middle of the park.

“At the time, center-midfield probably was my natural position because I played in midfield a lot more than I did at center-back,” he recalled.

Despite holding Real Madrid at their backyard, the Manchester club lost the second leg 2-1 at Old Trafford, as the Spanish side qualified 3-2 on aggregate.
