The young Stade Reims central defender has impressed in Ligue 1 this season and that has alerted Mikel Arteta to his formidable skills.
🥜 Disasi in a nutshell
The Reims youngster arrived at the club as an 18-year-old and made his debut for the club a year later. Reims was promoted at the end of 2017/18 and that saw Disasi make his French top-flight debut in August 2018. Disasi has enjoyed a fruitful central defensive partnership with Moroccan star Yunis Abdelhamid. The pair have been the bedrock of a team that boasts the best defensive record in France. They're definitely a tough side to break down, and Disasi's performances have been a big part of that.
💪🏿 Disasi's style & strengths
Axel Disasi is a physically imposing central defender who should have no problems adjusting to life in the Premier League. He's a tough-tackler who stands at 190cm, but the hallmarks of his game are his intelligence, natural understanding of the position and his reading of the game and awareness of dangerous situations. He tends to take risks in possession and that would be an area of his game that might need fine-tuning by Arteta and his staff.
At 22, he's already got the better part of two full seasons at the top-level under his belt.
✅ Reims defensive record
David Guion’s side has conceded just 21 times in 28 Ligue 1 outings in the 2019/20 season - only Real Madrid has conceded fewer in Europe’s top five leagues. Disasi's partnership with the more senior figure Abdelhamid has been a huge contributing factor.
🤔 Does Disasi fit the profile for Arsenal?
Mikel Arteta's Gunners side currently has a surplus of centre backs on its books, so in terms of numbers, it would be difficult to envisage Arsenal adding yet another to their roster. However, with Sokratis and David Luiz both the wrong side of 30, and injury problems continuing to plague English duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, Arsenal still need a commanding presence at the back. Another youngster who has impressed in Ligue 1, 19-year-old William Saliba, is already confirmed to be heading to the Emirates next season and big things are expected from the Saint-Etienne prospect. If Disasi is pursued by the club, he may well have to fight Saliba for a place on the right side of the Gunners central defence.
Disasi's contract at Reims runs down at the end of next season and they're resigned to losing him at the end of the current term for around £13m. At that price, he may well be worth the gamble.
