Laliga Roundup: Sevilla fights to hold Villarreal as Leganes and Granada fire blanks

The Spanish Laliga continued on Monday 22 June with two matches on the cards where Villarreal, Sevilla, Leganes and Granada were all in action.

In the first game, Champions League-chasing Sevilla had to come from behind twice to hold hosts Villarreal to a 2-2 draw to move third in the Laliga table.

Paco Alcacer gave Villarreal the lead but Sevilla captain Sergio Escudero hammered home a stinging shot from outside the penalty area for the first equalizer before the break.

Pau Torres was to restore the hosts lead as their side looked for a fourth straight win since La Liga returned after the COVID-19 lockdown but Munir El Haddadi's left-foot volley from an acute angle ensured that the tie hosted at the Estadio de la Ceramica ended in a draw.

The result consolidated Sevilla's hopes of a Champions League berth next season while inflicting a blow to similar ambitions held by the hosts, who moved up to sixth but are four points outside the top four.

The second game involving hosts Leganes and Granada ended in a stalemate with the results being detrimental for the hosts who are placed second from bottom with 25 points. As for Granada, they will hope that the result pumps their surge as they seek to make it to European places come the end of the season.
