Why Mohamed Elneny is missing training at Turkish side Besiktas

Mohamed Elneny has missed training sessions at Turkish side Besiktas before their 3-1 league loss against Kayserispor as he protests non-payment of his wages

The Egypt international's relationship with the club management has been one rocky patch in recent weeks as the club has reportedly failed to pay his wages since last October.

Reports in Turkish media claim Elneny, who is still under contract with Arsenal, is owed a total of €1.3 million, but the Turkish side has said that it is unable to settle the wages due to the current financial pressure caused by coronavirus outbreak.

Elneny recently extended his stay with the Turkish club until the end of the season and was reportedly paid an initial €600 000, an amount not good enough to convince him to resume training.

Elneny joined Besiktas on a year loan from Arsenal last summer and provided three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions for the Black Eagles this season, becoming a vital player in their squad.

Besiktas currently sit fifth on the Turkish Super League table with 50 points, four away from the top three. They will host eleventh-placed Kasimpasa in their next game on July 9th.
