Casemiro puts Real Madrid contract extension talks on hold

Brazilian midfielder Caemiro has put his Real Madrid contracts on hold with the player insisting that his focus was entirely on their Champions League tie with Manchester City.

Casemiro has his current deal expiring in 2023 and while Madrid is relaxed about his future, there have been rumours that the player might consider his options if he isn’t elevated to the level of some of the highest earners in the team.

Speaking to Brazil’s TV show Esporte Interativovia MM, Casemiro said: “It’s a tough question. I don’t think it’s time to talk about this. We have to think about City and nothing else. The club is going through a rough moment because of the pandemic and my agent will get back when the time is right.”

On the City game, Casemiro admitted that their fortunes had changed since the resumption of football and that the home side will not have fans something that might give them a slight advantage.

“Before the break, we were going through a tough period but now it is new normal for us. They won’t be able to rely on the home-field advantage and that will increase our odds a bit, but the players and the teams will be the same.

“It will be a beautiful game, tough for both sides. It’s true that it won’t be easy for us because of the loss in the first leg, but we’re Real Madrid and have the best players. We still have chances to go through,” Casemiro added.

Madrid will be at the Etihad Stadium on Friday for the second leg of Rund 16 of the UEFA Champions League with the Spanish giants trailing 2-1.
