A goal apiece from Juan Mata and substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwoodwas all Manchester United needed in their 3-0 win over Luton Town to sail to the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
After losing the game against Palace over the weekend, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made ten changes with only captain Harry Maguire the only player to be retained in the Tuesday night team.
The start for United was superb with the lively Jesse Lingard being a constant menace to the home side defence; the player who is being linked with a move to Spurs squaring the ball to Mata who tamely shot towards the near post for a Shea save in what was their first serious attack.
Fred to come close five minutes later as he unloaded a shot from 25 yards, it caught a deflection and flew wide with the opposition keeper having been left stranded.
United breakthrough, however, came in the 43rd minute when Moncur pulled a clumsy challenge on Williams in his own box. Up stepped Mata to send the goalkeeper the wrong way as the visitors went to the break with a lead.
The second half started as was the first but the home side was not going to relent; Williams forced to bring down LuaLua on a dangerous counter-attack for the home side- a move that handed him the first yellow card of the game.
United continued to push for a killer goal with Van De Beek being denied from close range by Shea in the 72nd minute with the home side making a double change after that threat. On came Harry Cornick for Jordan Clark with Elliot Lee being introduced for George Moncur.
United made a triple change of their won with Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford coming on for Van de Beek, Odion Ighalo and Juan Mata. But despite the changes, it was Luton who almost restored parity after a floated ball following a foul on Lualua by Matic, forced keeper Henderson to a double save after an earlier scramble was half-cleared.
The United substitutes were to combine with Greenwood teeing up Rashford for the visitors second two minutes from time; Greenwood nailing the last nail on the hosts' coffin in additional minutes.
