A man working as a groundsman for Ligue 1 side FC Lorient has tragically died after a floodlight bar on the stadium fell on him in a freak accident.
The 38-year-old man, who the club have identified as Yohann, was rushed to Scorff Hospital by air ambulance following Lorient’s 3-0 home defeat against Rennes on Sunday evening.
He was carrying out his usual duties after full-time when a ramp used to maintain the heating of the pitch fell on him.
The screams of personnel around the scene sounded the alarm, as emergency services rushed to his aid but he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
According to local news outlets, the man was a father of three and was volunteering for Lorient at the time of the catastrophe.
The Mayor of Lorient, Fabrice Loher, who was at the stadium at the time of the accident said: “It’s a terrible accident.
“The police from the Lorient police station have marked up the scene and an investigation is underway to understand the circumstances of the accident.”
