πŸ”΄ Liverpool vs Man United: Memorable moments

One of the fiercest rivalries in modern football takes centre stage this Sunday as the two most successful clubs in England's history do battle for the 233rd time.

The 2020-21 edition of Liverpool vs Man United takes on extra significance with the Anfield club having claimed its 19th English title and first-ever Premier League crown last season, a triumph that takes them to within touching distance of United's 20 top-flight titles.

United is perched at the summit of the table at this stage of the season for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era, making this a fascinatingly-poised contest.

Understandably, this rivalry has a rich history of producing unforgettable moments. Here are just a few of the most recent ones.

⛈ Torres terrorizes Vidić (2009)

Liverpool humiliated the champions on their own turf despite Cristiano Ronaldo firing the Red Devils into an early lead. Legendary Spaniard Fernando Torres was a thorn in Nemanja Vidić's side all afternoon and after hounding the Serbian to rob him of possession just eight minutes later, El Niño raced through to equalize coolly past Edwin van der Sar. Captain fantastic Stevie G stepped up to give Liverpool the lead from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Patrice Evra. The skipper celebrated in style.

Nemanja Vidić nightmare was complete when he was dismissed for fouling Gerrard as the last man and Liverpool made United pay the ultimate price, with Fabio Aurelio curling in the free-kick to stretch their advantage. Liverpool substitute Andrea Dossena added insult to injury when he lobbed home to make it 4-1 to the visitors. A famous win for the visiting Reds under Rafa Benítez.

🚲 Berbatov brilliance (2010)

Man United's brilliant Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov stole the show at Old Trafford, scoring a famous hat-trick in a pulsating United win in 2010. Steven Gerrard's quick-fire second-half double brought Liverpool back into a contest which they had trailed 2-0, but United nicked it with six minutes to play when Berbatov rose highest to head home a John O' Shea cross.

Berbatov's second, a stunningly acrobatic overhead kick that thundered in off the underside of the bar, was the crowning moment in an exhilarating match which must surely go down as a Premier League classic.

⚔️ Suárez & Evra friction (2012)

Bad blood is a running theme when Liverpool & Man United collide, and in 2012 it got personal between Luis Suárez and Patrice Evra. Suárez refused to shake his opponent's hand before a Premier League encounter, and this followed on from an incident where the Uruguayan racially abused Evra in October 2011. The then-25-year-old Liverpool striker was branded as "a disgrace" by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for his lack of contrition and remorse, and his behaviour was also condemned by his own club.

💋 Stevie G seals it with a kiss (2014)

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was up to his camera-kissing antics again, scoring penalties either side of the halftime interval as Brendan Rodgers's side utterly dominated their rivals. The Reds skipper missed a third spot-kick after Daniel Sturridge was fouled by Nemanja Vidić - the Serbian collected his 4th red card against Liverpool in the process - but Luis Suárez added a third and there was no stopping Liverpool.

💪 Salah flexes on United (2020)

Mo Salad had become a prolific goal-scorer against virtually every opponent but United in the early stages of his Liverpool career, but the Egyptian superstar broke his duck against the Red Devils to seal a massive win in the first week of 2020. Salah raced clear to put the game beyond doubt and it was a vital three points which nudged the Reds closer to a Premier League title. They ended up doing so at a canter.

Liverpool and United have been at each other's throats since 1894 as bad blood and a quest for English supremacy continue to make this a relevant rivalry in the modern age. Let's see what Sunday has in store for the watching world.
