Tottenham come from goal down to beat resilient Southampton in Mason's first match

Ryan Mason started his Tottenham Hotspur managerial career with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Southampton on Wednesday night.

Danny Ings gave Southampton the lead in the first half, but Gareth Bale equalized in the second period before Son Heung-min scored from the penalty spot to ensure maximum points.

The win moved Spurs sixth in the standings and within striking distance of the top-four, with five matches to go.

Southampton started the match the better side and threatened in the second minute as Mohammed Salisu attempted to convert a lofted cross, but Hugo Lloris showed his brilliant reflexes and pulled off a glorious save to stop the ball from hitting the net.

Che Adams then picked up the rebound inside the penalty area and released a good shot to the bottom left corner, but once again, Lloris showed his quality as he dived superbly to stop his effort.

The match's tempo however slowed down and there was little action until Ings put the ball in the back of the net on the half-hour mark.

The striker jumped highest in the box to meet a corner from James Ward-Prowse, and his header bounced off the post into the bottom right corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Bale then found himself in the right place at the right time on the hour mark to pull Spurs level, rifling home after a rebound fell to him.

Spurs thought they had taken the lead in the 75th minute after Sergio Reguilon played a neat ball to Heung-Min Son to easily slot a first-time shot past Alex McCarthy into the bottom left corner, but it was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

With the match seemingly headed for a draw, the hosts got the chance to make it 2-1 when Moussa Djenepo committed a foul inside the box.

Son stepped up to easily bury it past McCarthy for the win, further boosting their hopes of making it into the top-four.
