FIFA World Cup winner Mario Gotze has revealed why he turned down a move to English Premier League giants Liverpool in 2016.
Gotze almost moved to England when Jurgen Klopp was named the Liverpool boss but a deal fell through with the German admitting that he didn’t make a move owing to the Reds position in the Premier League with the player choosing to return to Borussia Dortmund as he felt they had a better chance of winning the Champions League.
“You have to imagine it like this: Where did I come from? From Munich, where I had reached the semi-finals in the Champions League three times with Bayern. I wanted to do that again!
“Liverpool finished eighth in the league. In the situation at the time, the likelihood of winning the Champions League with Borussia seemed much greater,” Gotze told 11 Freunde as relayed by Fussbal.
The move however seemed to have been the wrong one with Gotze going on to win one DFB-Pokal trophy with Dortmund in contrast to Liverpool who won a Premier League and Champions League trophy in the subsequent four years following his decision.
Gotze still enjoyed a successful career though having won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund and three with Bayern during his time in Germany.
