Midfielder Juan Mata has been asked to take a pay cut if he is to stay at Manchester United.
The 33-year-old is out of contract at United at the end of the month and while the club confirmed that they are in talks with the player in their bid to keep him for more years, the Daily Star reveals that the move would only materialize if the Spaniard accepts a pay cut.
According to the tabloid, Mata will have to agree to his weekly salary being slashed from £170,000 to £100,000 and it remains to be seen if the player will agree to the new demands.
United feels that they can still have the player in the team with those terms since a few teams would afford to pay him what the club currently gives him. His experience and leadership are something that United doesn’t want to lose too.
Mata has been linked with former club Valencia but they are not willing to pay the player the same wages United has been paying him but Mata could settle for something less since he wants to be close to his family following the demise of his mum earlier in the year.
Apart from Valencia, the ex-Chelsea star has been linked with a move to an unnamed club in Saudi Arabia.
