The 27-year-old has long been linked with a move to Camp Nou, and is one of the players who coach Ronald Koeman has been adamant about signing. Both parties were on the verge of making a bid for the frontman in the January window, but financial issues stymied the deal.
Depay had a fantastic season with Olympique Lyon, scoring 20 goals in the 2020-21 Ligue One season, tied for second with Wissam Ben Yedder for the most goals. The Dutchman also showed off his playmaking ability, assisting on 12 of the 20 big chances he generated, which was more than anybody else in the competition.
Depay also has an outstanding international record with the Dutch national team, with whom he is presently competing at the European Championships.
Barcelona has signed their third free agent of the summer, following Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia, as part of Joan Laporta's structural, financial, and sporting overhaul.
It will be interesting to observe how the Blaugrana integrate both Aguero and Depay into the squad chemistry after such an active window.
Both arrivals, though, can be exciting, given Barcelona's lack of penetration up front has been a significant talking point since the end of the 2020-21 season.
Either way, the poorly kept secret of Memphis Depay’s arrival is finally out in the open. Exciting times lie ahead to see what the Dutchman can offer for the Garnet and Blue in the coming years.
