Reports: Man City set to announce new 5-year contract for John Stones

Manchester City are expected to announce a five-year contract extension for 27-year-old defender John Stones, worth 250k per week, that will keep the English center-back at the club until 2026, according to the latest news from The Athletic.

Stones' current deal was slated to expire next summer, and according to Ornstein, Man City set the end of June as the deadline for reaching an agreement with the defender, failing which they would begin looking for replacements.

Negotiations for the new contract began in April, following John Stones' outstanding performances in City's title-winning campaign, which earned him a return to the international fold, and they were completed before City's self-imposed deadline.

The negotiations resulted in an extension worth £13 million per season before taxes for the Englishman, which is a big increase over his previous contract.

According to the report, Stones' new contract puts him in the same league as Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk, but he's still a long way from David Alaba, Sergio Ramos, and Raphael Varane, who are said to earn £10 million net per season.
