Mendy produces masterclass as Chelsea stun resilient Brentford

Chelsea fought hard to register a 1-0 victory over resilient Brentford to go above Manchester City and Liverpool and back to the top of the Premier League.

Brentford almost took an early lead. The hosts had the ball on the right, it was headed down to Norgaard who could go for goal but instead headed down for Mbeumo, and his first-time effort hit the post and eas cleared.

Chelsea hit back immediately through a counter-attack, Werner delivered a low cross for Lukaku who turned the ball home at close range but the flag was up.

With just a minute remaining to stoppage time, Chelsea took the lead through Ben Chilwell. Azpilicueta stood up a cross for Lukaku, who battled with Jansson - the Brentford defender poked it clear, but only as far as Chilwell, who was unmarked and run onto it. England international controls his half volley brilliantly, and it flew past Raya into the net from 15 yards.

In the second half, it was all Brentford's attack, chasing for an equalizer but Chelsea's backline stood firm. The hosts went close to taking the lead but were denied by the post. Mbeumo started it off, he then combined with Norgaard who played it on to Forss. The sub rolled in Mbeumo but he fired against the woodwork.

There was a penalty appeal from the home side after Toney went down on a challenge from Challobal who pulled him down after misjudging a high ball into the box. There was a relief for Chalobah as the flag went up for an offside.

Brentford remain in seventh after the loss.
