Brighton 1-4 Man City: Foden shines for the Cityzens in a convincing win

Manchester City trounced Brighton and moved up to second place in the Premier League thanks to a devastating first-half display from Phil Foden.

Pep Guardiola's team scored three goals in the first half-hour as Brighton, who could have moved above City with a win, were unable to cope with City's sweeping onslaught.

In the 10th minute, Lewis Dunk made a superb hooked clearing off the line from Gabriel Jesus' shot, but it was just a temporary reprieve for the hosts, as City seized the lead three minutes later.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez of the Seagulls made an easy save from a deflected shot at the feet of Bernardo Silva, who immediately found Ilkay Gundogan for a close-range goal.

After a devastatingly rapid break from a Brighton assault, the visitors made it 2-0, storming up the pitch before Jack Grealish flicked the ball into Foden's path, and the striker made no mistake for his third goal of the season.

Just seconds later, Foden scored his fourth goal of the season when Jesus' shot rebounded off him after Sanchez could only stab away Grealish's low effort at the near post.

Just before halftime, the England international came close to completing his hat-trick, but Sanchez made a fantastic stop to keep away a curling effort.

After the break, Brighton improved, and Ederson had to be on his toes to keep out good chances from Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard.

When Enock Mwepu was taken down inside the area, Alexis Mac Allister just managed to get the ball past the City goalkeeper's dive in the closing stages, Ederson was eventually beaten.

Last season, Brighton came back from two goals down to beat Guardiola's side, but there was no such comeback this time as City cruised to victory thanks to an unmarked Riyad Mahrez's stoppage-time goal, bringing the visitors back to within two points of leaders Chelsea.
