✈️ Derby Day weekend preview: Jetting from Soweto to Seville via Manchester & Milan

Few things get the pulses racing in football quite like a local rivalry with your fiercest foes.

This weekend serves up four such battles starting with the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford early on Saturday.

🥧 United vs City

None of the last five Manchester Derby clashes across all competitions has produced goals at both ends, perhaps evidence of the enormity of the occasion. Ole Gunnar Solskjær's men produced a top-quality display to beat Spurs last time out, which would have exorcised some of the demons they faced after a 0-5 thumping by Liverpool at the Theatre of Dreams.

Pep Guardiola's team has issues of its own after losing at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, making it two defeats from two for the Citizens after their EFL Cup exit on penalties at the hands of West Ham.

It's the Red Devils' defence that has been especially leaky though - only Norwich (28) and Leicester (25) have conceded more goals amongst EPL teams across all competitions than United's 23. Manager Solskjær was once again grateful for the stoppage-time heroics (in both halves) of Cristiano Ronaldo whose midweek brace in Bergamo secured a point for United at Atalanta.

What will the 186th Manchester Derby have in store for us? It's usually explosive when red and blue collide in the Northwest of England and this Saturday should be absolutely no different. A small side note - the away side on the day has won five of the last seven meetings between these sides across all competitions.

🍟 Chiefs vs Pirates

With eight PSL titles between them (four apiece) Chiefs and Pirates are the joint-second most successful teams in South African league football history. But for a team of Kaizer Chiefs' stature and continental reputation, no league titles since 2015 isn't really good enough for its legions of supporters. The Glamour Boys finished all the way down in 8th last season and Pirates ended third, a massive 17 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

But, despite all of that, the Soweto Derby remains one of the most magnetic fixtures of any African football season. Reputation may well precede current standings, but Amakhosi vs the Buccaneers is always a vibrant occasion not to be missed.

🍝 Milan vs Inter

Instalment number 188 of the iconic Derby della Madonnina. Two teams that can't stand the sight of one another and two sets of fans that have an even tetchier relationship. None of the last seven head-to-heads has ended in a draw, with the away side on the day winning four of those battles.

Champions Inter finds themselves needing to claw back a seven-point deficit to archrivals Milan, who are unbeaten after 11 rounds, winning 10 matches and setting a frightening pace in the 2021-22 Scudetto race. Inter's star striker Lautaro Martínez bagged a brace when the Nerazzurri handed the Rossoneri a 3-0 defeat back in February and they'll need their talented Argentine to be on the money again this Sunday.

This is a fixture with a rich history that exhibits guts and glamour in equal measure.

🥘 Betis vs Sevilla

El Gran Derbi is one of the most traditional city rivalries in Spain's top-flight. Both teams are legitimately keeping pace in the early throes of a potentially thrilling and unpredictable LaLiga title race, and a positive result in this fixture would mean a whole lot more than just three points.

40-year-old Betis club captain Joaquín is unlikely to start, but his experience from the bench may prove invaluable on an occasion of this magnitude. In the red corner, Sevilla's training ground, the Estadio Jesús Navas, is named after their legendary skipper. Andalusia comes to a standstill when Los Verdiblancos and Los Nervionenses come toe-to-toe.

On weekends like this, we are reminded just how much football means to its supporters, especially when the enemy is in town.
