🐝 Youssoufa Moukoko: Checking in on the Borussia Dortmund wonderkid's progress

After quickly outgrowing youth football, 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko is already very much part of the first team furniture at Borussia Dortmund and there's plenty more to come.

🌍 Quick background

Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, Moukoko has represented Germany at various youth levels. He spent the first 10 years of his life living with his grandparents in Cameroon's capital city before joining his father, a German citizen since the 1990s, in Hamburg in the summer of 2014. Moukoko has quickly gained global notoriety for his prolific exploits in front of goal as a youngster and set some astonishing records so far already in his fledgling career.

🪨 Moukoko's milestones

  • First featured for BVB's U17 youth team when he was just 12 years old
  • Scored 83 goals in 50 U17 Bundesliga matches
  • Made his first start for the U19s aged 15
  • Scored 44 goals in 23 games for the U19 side
  • Youngest ever player to feature in the Bundesliga (16 years, 1 day)
  • Youngest ever player to feature in the Champions League (16 years, 18 days)
  • Youngest goal-scorer in Bundesliga history (16 years, 28 days)
  • Called up to Germany's squad for the U21 Euros

🤕 2021-22 interrupted by injury

It's been a bit of a stop-start campaign for the 16-year-old in 2021-22. Moukoko has appeared in four different competitions for BVB this term (Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup), but only turned out six times in the Bundesliga after 11 rounds, claiming a solitary assist and no goals. There is a proviso though: Moukoko missed six weeks of action with a muscle injury but made his return last time out against RB Leipzig.

🗣 What does Erling Håland say?

"Moukoko's much better than I was at his age. I've never seen such a good 15-year-old in my life. The advantage for him is that he's already playing for Dortmund at the age of 15. At his age, I was still playing for my home town of Bryne."

🎯 Moukoko is ready

Frighteningly clinical in front of goal, the Cameroon-born striker has made a mockery of youth level football, making his U15 debut for Borussia Dortmund aged 12. He's now a first-teamer and the youngest player to ever appear in the UEFA Champions League. He's also a Germany U21 international.

🗓 The remainder of 2021

Dortmund has nine fixtures left of this calendar year and because of the frenetic nature of that schedule, Moukoko will surely see plenty of game-time. Next week's Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon offers another opportunity for him to strut his stuff on the continental stage, and then there's a mouthwatering meeting with Bayern Munich on December 4th. They are the Bundesliga top two as things stand now.

With Moukoko only turning 17 on Saturday, the sky is well and truly the limit for a player who's going to score a lot of goals in his career. We'll be watching him closely during the festive period.
