Transfer rumours

Highly-rated Portsmouth centre-back Matt Clarke, who has been monitored by Stoke City scouts, is reportedly on the cusp of joining Brighton and Hove Albion.

Graham Potter is expected to make the 22-year-old his first signing after arriving on the south coast from Swansea.

Potter had been spotted in the stands when Portsmouth lost their League One play-off semi-final against Sunderland and had already been a known admirer.

The Portsmouth News suggest the switch is part of a transfer domino set to be started by Manchester City.

Apparently, their pursuit of £90m one-time Stoke target Harry Maguire will see Leicester turn to Brighton's Lewis Dunk and see Potter need a centre-half.

Nathan Jones was heavily linked with a bid for Clarke in January before he brought in Danny Batth from Wolves via a loan spell at Middlesbrough.

He has also been put in the frame for Aberdeen's Scott McKenna and Barnsley's Liam Lindsay.

The manager is closing in on his first three signings of the summer; free agent trio goalkeeper Adam Davies, striker Lee Gregory and forward Nick Powell.

A left-back and a defensive midfielder are also expected to be high on his agenda as he prepares to go with his favoured diamond system next season.
