Latest Top 10 CAF Nations ranking before AFCON 2019

The last time Futaa reported the CAF Top 10 nations in March 2019, Senegal and Morocco were still in the top two. But three months later we’ve seen some changes at the top.

Nigeria are no longer fourth, Ghana remained unchanged, while the Ivory Coast moved inside the top 10 to replace fellow West African giants Mali.

The Lions of Teranga’s respectable shot at the 2018 World Cup was followed by flying success in the AFCON qualifiers, therefore leaving the likes of Tunisia and Morocco trailing at the top.

Yet a complete look at the top 10 shows a fascinating power battle between West African and the North.

  • 17 - Uganda
  • 25 - Kenya

To make full sense of how FIFA determines the rankings stucture, here's an explanation statement released on FIFA's website in 2018.

"SUM" as it relies on adding/subtracting points won or lost for a game to/from the previous point totals rather than averaging game points over a given time period as in the previous version of the World Ranking.

"The points which are added or subtracted are partially determined by the relative strength of the two opponents, including the logical expectation that teams higher in the ranking should fare better against teams lower in the ranking," FIFA explained.
