Absa Premiership matchday one: Sundowns, Pirates, Wits begin title chase

  • 2019/20 Absa Premiership
  • Matchday one Futaa fixtures preview
  • Mamelodi Sundowns take on SuperSport United in biggest game.

The new PSL season is finally here. With great excitement, we have up to six clubs that are looking powerful enough to lift the 2019/20 title.

Will Sundowns defend it to lift a third-straight title under Pitso? Will Micho’s Orlando Pirates do it this term after losing it by two points last season?

Will Gavin Hunt’s Bidvest Wits have another flying start but not bottle it all around the final stretch? How about the Kaizer Chiefs, Cape Town City and SuperSport United who also have the qualities to conquer this league?

As far as possible relegation candidates go, and based on squads on paper, as well as coaching changes, Polokwane City, Stellenbosch FC, Bloemfontein Celtic and Baroka FC do not look quite strong  enougth to avoid the dreaded drop.

All of the above questions will be finally answered in May next year, but some may lose on the running much earlier than others.

As they say, the league championship is a marathon, and this weekend can be viewed as only the first kilometer of a total 30.
