Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu says the North London side made a mistake in selling winger Alex Iwobi to Everton this summer.
The Nigerian joined Everton in the transfer deadline day for a reported fee of £34m. Iwobi came through the club’s academy and ended up making 149 appearances for the first team, 51 under Unai Emery last season.
The Gunners had landed Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a club-record fee of £72m, which pushed the Nigerian out of the Emirates and Kanu doesn't understand why his former side sold Iwobi, insisting it came as a complete shock to him.
“I would say they made a mistake, 100 percent,” he said.
“Why they let him go, I don’t know. He’s a boy who, in and out, is Arsenal. He always wanted to do his best for the club. He loves the club, but not only that he can play football.”
“What he brings week in, week out, the fans need to appreciate that. I think he is still young and those are the type of people you want in the team, people who grew up here, who knows everything about the club and wants to die for the club.”
He was one of them, so for us to lose him and to let him go, was a shock. I couldn’t really believe we did it, but that’s football.”
The 23-year-old netted 15 goals in 149 appearances for the Gunners, helping the club lift one FA Cup in the process.
