Spanish football officials have requested the El Clasico be moved from the Camp Nou to the Santiago Bernabeu amid political unrest in the city.
The incident is as a result of the Spanish government jailing nine Catalan separatist leaders on Monday over a failed declaration of independence for Catalonia, with the leaders receiving between nine and 13 years behind bars.
Demonstrations have been reported in the city, with tension building by the minute as thousands gather in protest.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at Barcelona's home turf, Nou Camp.
La Liga have asked for the Clasico to be moved to Bernabeu because of the political trouble in Barcelona, say El País. Hell of an accidental way to draw attention to the issue if it is switched https://t.co/HH1o4779x3— Rik Sharma (@riksharma_) October 16, 2019
Should the request be accepted, it would mean that the reverse El Clasico on 1 March would be played in Barcelona, rather than the Spanish capital.
The two sides occupy the first two positions on the standings after eight matches, with the Madrid side leading their rivals by two points.
