Mamelodi Sundowns needed to restore their pride and did exactly that with a 5-0 mauling of Usuthu in Pretoria today.
Kabo Yellow looked for a place in the Telkom Knockout last eight and follow the country’s top sides. Coach Mosimane made a surprise selection with Andlile Jali in midfield, while Motjeka Madisha started in central defense and Thapelo Morena up front.
A first half of tight AmaZulu defending was only broken once with an Ali Meza goal on 44 minutes. But the next 45 minutes would be complete terror for Usuthu.
It all seemed as if coach Mosimane had given his men a half-time scolding after numerous wasted chances.
The complete collapse began on 55 minutes. Debutant Mario Booysen tried a back-pass header but his own goalie Neil Boshoff left his line to hand Sundowns a 2-0 lead.
The storm continued to pour on 70 minutes. Mbongeni Gumede brought down Morena inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Gaston Sirino said thanks very much with a superbly taken kick. The Uruguayan need just four minutes to grab his brace.
Finally, substitute Uruguayan striker Mauricio Affonso had a goal to add. The incredibly tall striker scored a goal of his complete type. Morena flew in a very high & perfect cross for Affonso to nod for his second but first domestic goal for Sundowns.
The league champions’ win confirmed entrance into some big TKO company. Sundowns have joined the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United in the last eight.
