Newell Old Boys gave a hero’s welcome to their former old boy Diego Maradona when he returned as a manager to face them with Gimnasia in the Argentine first division.
Gimnasia who were at the foot of the league log before clash didn’t disappoint their manager in front of their former employers as they ran 4-0 winners in the clash staged at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa on Tuesday.
Before the game, Newells fans packed the concourse outside the hotel in Rosario where Maradona and his side were staying, chanting his name hours before the match with the football icon joining them in singing and dance.
When he arrived at the stadium he was invited to sign his special chair as photographers scrambled to get a picture of him and fans from both sides waved flags with his face on.
Maradona, who turns 59 today, then sat down and watched his side inflict what was the Rosario side's second defeat of the season.
Good grief, they’ve even given Diego a special chair to watch the game from. pic.twitter.com/V35GikNGgj— MUNDIAL (@MundialMag) October 29, 2019
