South Africa take on Sudan in Soweto this afternoon and the job is a first win in the AFCON 2021 Qualification.
Molefi Ntseki’s men were very poor in the 2-0 loss to Ghana last Thursday night – making less than three crosses to Bradley Grobler and scarce shots at goal.
This afternoon’s match, against a Sudan that defeated Sao Tome 4-0 last week, could see a few changes in midfield and attack. But who will start for Bafana Bafana and who will be dropped to the bench today?
South Africa team news
Bongani Zungu is the biggest doubt. The Amiens midfielder was forced off against Ghana on 20 minutes due to a knee injury. Thamsanqa Mkhize also suffered an ankle knock - while Thapelo Morena had a calf strain.
Ronwen Williams will remain in goal behind a largely unchanged defence. Those will be Thulani Hlatshwayo, Buhle Mkhwanazi, Sifiso Hlanti and Erick Mathoho. The Kaizer Chiefs man will come in for Mkhize if both Morena and Mkhize miss out. Mathoho’s inclusion in central defence means Hlatshwayo may shift to right back.
In front of the defence, Dean Furman is most likely to anchor the midfield. In front of Furman will be Guigamp’s Lebo Phiri coming in for Thato Mokeke (never offered much going forward on Thursday). Kamohelo Mokotjo was unfit for Ghana and may remain out again today.
Bafana’s attacking three will feature Percy Tau, Kermit Erasmus and Thulani Serero - while Bradley Grobler will lead the front-line alone.
Full 4-2-3-1 line-up:
Williams, Hlatshwayo, Mathoho, Mkhwanazi, Hlanti, Furman, Phiri, Serero, Tau, Erasmus, Grobler.
