South Africa beat Sudan 1-0 to make it three points from two games in the AFCON 2021 Group C qualifiers.
Guingamp’s Lebo Phiri scored a peachy strike on 44 minutes to seal the victory at the Orlando Stadium today.
Coach Molefi Ntseki made as many as six changes after last Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Ghana. Erick Mathoho, Thapelo Morena, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Phiri, Thulani Serero and Lebo Mothiba all came in to start. The likes of Thamsanqa Mkhize, Buhle Mkwanazi, Thato Mokeke, Thembinkosi Lorch, Bongani Zungu and Bradley Grobler made way.
Ntseki’s men dominated from start to finish. Mothiba missed two goals within 15 minutes - including a miss from Morena. In a Mokotjo, Tau, Phiri and Serero-inspired half, Bafana would make a total of 12 chances inside 45 minutes and six shots on target. Just a minute before half-time, Phiri eventually found the net with a stunning left shot into the roof of the net.
More waves of attacks continued in the second half but shots on goals were scarce. Bafana’s first substitution came on 68 minutes. Phiri was forced out for Lebohang Manyama. Kermit Erasmus followed in on 70 minutes to replace Mothiba.
Erasmus almost made it 2-0 but for a great save by Sudan goalkeeper Ali Aboeshren. Substitute Grobler, who came on for Serero on 70 minutes, found the net on 80 minutes but was judged offside.
SA will next be in action against Sao Tome & Principe on 31 August 2020.
