Edinson Cavani lifts the lid on row with Lionel Messi after 'offering to fight' Argentina star

Following his row with Lionel Messi in Argentina's 2-2 draw against Uruguay, Edinson Cavani has brushed aside the incident claiming that it is "part of South American football".

The spat started after Messi was fouled in the first half of Monday night’s friendly in Israel with Cavani approaching the Barcelona forward after he was brought down and the two players began exchanging words.

Cavani offered to fight Messi with the Argentina captain reported to have replied "whenever you want" to the challenge as a scuffle broke out.

Diego Godin also tried to act as a peacemaker as he put his arm around Messi to try and bring a sense of calm to the situation.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Cavani opened up on his spat with Messi, "It's part of football, Clasicos are like this. The truth is that it was at times a game that had friction, there were challenges and things that are part of football, especially of South American [football].

"We take positives from our performance and the fact that we were able to score two goals. We still need to improve but it's good to end the year like this."
