Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool needed Takumi Minamino in clash against Monterrey

Despite not officially signing him, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that his side needed Takumi Minamino in their 2-1 win against Monterrey.

Liverpool opened the scoring through Naby Keita in the 11th minute but Monterrey equalized courtesy of Rogerio Funes Mori three minutes later, Firmino scored a stoppage-time winner to set a date with Flamengo.

According to reports, Liverpool activated a £7.5m release clause in Minamino’s contract but he’s unable to sign for the club until the transfer window opens in January.

Speaking in a press conference after the win over Monterrey, Klopp was asked if Minamino's deal is official, "So, I cannot speak about it – sorry! You are too early.

"I would have felt really good today to be honest if we could have brought him on. He’s not yet our player so we have to wait for that."

Minamino was reported to be in Merseyside for a medical on Wednesday but Liverpool were keeping their cards close to their chest on the speculation.
