Southampton 1-1 Tottenham: Saints strike late to force unwanted FA Cup replay

Southampton made a late strike to force a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in an FA Cup fourth-round tie staged at St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday 25th.

After seeing their opener disallowed, Heung-Min Son put Spurs ahead in the 58th minute, however, the north London side conceded a late goal thanks to  Sofiane Boufal's brilliant strike.

Spurs opened the scoring after half an hour through Lo Celso but his strike was disallowed. There was a VAR check as his shot hit Son as it went in with the South Korean in an offside position.

End to end game, Soton responded immediately through Ings. A beautiful ball was sent inside the box by Ward Prowse and it met the Soton striker, who took a touch and then hooked it over Lloris before placing it to the net but Tanganga was in the right position to clear it. This came moments after Spurs had their own chance, Alli had played Lucas through, but Gunn narrowed the angle and made a good stop.

Finally, Spurs took the lead in the 58th minute through Son. Lo Celso was involved as he drove forward through the midfield, the ball fell to Son and he drilled into the bottom corner superbly from the edge of the box. There was a VAR check to see if there was a foul on Soton defender as Dele Alli appeared to have brought Jack Stephens down. After some time, the goal stood.

Saint scored late on to set an unwanted replay on the cards for Jose Mourinho with only two minutes remaining. Soton had the ball in the middle before it was played on the left wing to Ings who delivered a low cross to Boufal and made no mistake, finishing at the top corner with a beautiful strike.

The draw means it will be settled at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to determine the team that will advance to the fifth round of the competition.

The draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup will take place on Monday before the Bournemouth vs Arsenal encounter.
