Jesse Lingard was among the goalscorers as Manchester United strolled to an easy 6-0 win over League Two side Tranmere Rovers in an FA Cup clash staged on Sunday.
Unexpectedly hosts Tranmere started the game brightly with Phil Jones getting into the referees' book as early as the fourth minute after clattering Ferrier who was on his back.
When the game settled, there was no doubt what United could do in the horrible pitch. Goals started flowing with captain Harry Maguire opening the scoring proceedings in the tenth minute in what was his first United goal since crossing from Leicester in the summer.
Even before Tranmere could settle, Diogo Dalot made it 2-0 for the visitors three minutes after Maguire’s effort. Dalot on the overlap came on to a pass from Martial, cutting outside and smashing the ball home in what was his first goal too for United.
Lingard made it 3-0 in what was his first goal since 2018 in the 16th minute; the England midfielder bending in a sumptuous effort after being put through by Maguire. Jones was to make it four for United with a thumping header from a Perreira corner before Anthony Martial ensured that the visitors had a 5-0 goal cushion at the stroke of half time.
There was some fear from the home side that United could have gone to the rampage following their first-half display but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw it as a chance to give some game time to his resting players.
He was to introduce Fred and Chong for Martial and Nemanja Matic at the interval with the half only bearing one goal from Mason Greenwood who tucked in a penalty in the 56th minute after Chong had been brought down.
