Sudan shortlists two for vacant head coach role

Sudan FA has announced the shortlisting of two trainers as they search for the replacement of sacked Zdravko Logarusic.

According to a tweet by Nigerian journalist Nuhu Adams, the Sudanese FA has shortlisted Belgian Ronny van Geneugden and Hubert Velud for the vacant role.

Logarusic was sacked in December after a 1-0 loss to South Africa in 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifier in November. The 54-year-old led Sudan to bronze in the 2018 African Nations Championships in Morocco.

Ronny Van Geneugden is currently sports director at Lommel. He was appointed the Malawi head coach in April 2017. The contract expired on 31 March 2019 and on 6 April 2019, the Football Association of Malawi announced that the contract would not be renewed.

Hubert Velud coached the Togo national football team from 2009 to 2010. He was sacked as the head coach of Algerian side JS Kabylie last week. Velud was shot in the arm in an attack by Angolan rebels while travelling with Togo's national football team to the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

In early January, news out of Ghana believed that Kwesi Appiah is likely to become the Sudanese Football coach. Ghana’s GNA Sports had confirmed that Appiah has had an approach from Sudan and the conversation is now open.

Appiah's negotiations with the Sudan Football Association came days after leaving the Ghana Football Association.
