Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel suffered racist abuse in his club’s 2-1 win over Fenerbahçe on Saturday in the Turkish top-flight league.
Mikel-who is currently in the books of Trabzonspor moved to third spot in the league just three points behind leaders Sivasspor-was targeted in his social media accounts by the Fenerbahce fans.
Thousands of abusive messages were apparently sent to the former Chelsea player as well as his family, prompting Trabzonspor, who recently appointed another Chelsea legend, Eddie Newton, as an assistant coach, to release a statement condemning the attacks and confirming that they’re pressing criminal charges as well.
Mikel had to be separated from Fener captain Emre Belözoğlu following a scuffle after the final whistle something that his opposing fans didn’t take lightly.
Mikel, through Haberler said that Emre swore at him and his family something he said had promoted the scuffle.
“Emre swore at me and my family. It is not possible to accept this.,” Mikel said.
Racism is a shelter for helpless and ignorant. We condemn the racist attacks against our player Obi Mikel after the match against Fenerbahçe and we bring to the public attention that a criminal complaint has been filed against the assailants. #WeStandwithObi #SayNoToRacism pic.twitter.com/QSOgPI9fZ2— Trabzonspor_en (@Trabzonspor_EN_) February 3, 2020
