Real Sociedad dumped hosts Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey with a 4-3 thumping in a dramatic match played on Thursday night.
The hosts started the match in a sluggish manner, with the visitors sitting deep and absorbing the little pressure thrown at them.
Despite their slow start Zinedine Zidane's men were the first to test the goalkeeper, Karim Benzema unleashing a stinging shot that was well saved by Alejandro Remiro on the 10th minute.
Sociedad then took the lead against the run of play through Martin Odegaard, who connected well with a rebound ball from outside the box following Areola's save on the 22nd minute.
The goal startled the hosts, who threw more men up front as they went out for the equalizer. They came close through Toni Kroos (twice) and Karim Benzema, but it was Sociedad who had yet another clear chance to double their lead on the 33rd minute.
Alexander Isak found some space inside the box and only had the keeper to beat, but lashed his shot way over the bar.
James Rodriguez then got a chance from outside the box and smashed a glorious looking effort towards the bottom left corner, but Remiro thwarted him with a great two-handed save.
Alexander Isak thought he had doubled Sociedad's goal five minutes after the restart, but his effort was ruled out after a VAR check.
There were three goals in six minutes (54. 56. 59), with two of those scored by Isak as Sociedad took a 3-1 lead, with the Marcelo scoring for the hosts.
Any hope of a comeback for the hosts were extinguished on the 69th minute as the lively Isak picked out Mikel Merino with a sweet pass, and he latched on to it to score the fourth.
Vinicius Junior then scored Real Madrid's second of the night, but after long VAR checks, it was ruled out for offside as Sociedad celebrated.
They, however, got their second goal on the 81st minute as Rodrygo got to the end of a sweet pass by Vinicius Junior to half the score.
Real kept pushing for another goal and they managed to grab a third as Nacho headed in on the 94th minute following a goal-mouth melee.
They came back one more time as they went in search of the fourth goal that could take the match into extra time, but Sociedad thwarted their efforts as they held on to win 4-3.
