Club Brugge and Manchester United played out to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League's last-32 clash in a match played in Belgium on Thursday night.
The two goals were both scored in the first half, with both teams struggling to take full control of the match.
The tie started with the home side on the front foot and went close in the third minute as Dennis Emmanuel's effort was blocked by Victor Lindelof with Luke Shaw beaten on the wing.
There was little action in the remaining minutes of the opening quarter, until the 15th minute when the scoreline changed.
Simon Mignolet restarted quickly following a corner clearance, despite calls from Nemanja Matic that the ball had gone out for another corner kick.
Mignolet's long ball over Man United's defense found Bonaventure, who easily lofted it over the onrushing Sergio Romero for the opener.
United could have found themselves two goals down on the 18th minute after Hans Vanaken, Percy Tau and Mats Rits combined well inside United's box, only for Rits' ball to narrowly miss the target.
The hosts kept knocking on United's door and the ever-green Bonaventure came close on the 28th minute, but his effort to squeeze the ball in Romero's near post was kept out.
United, however, got a crucial away goal on the 36th minute following a dreadful mistake from Brugge.
Brandon Mechele allowed Maxim De Cuyper's throw-in to run across his body but skidded off the surface and Anthony Martial robbed him before running clean through on goal and sliding it in for a 1-1 scoreline.
Martial came close to giving United the lead on the 43rd minute, but his effort ricocheted off the post with Mignolet well beaten as the match went into the break both teams tied at 1-1.
Brugge were lucky to get away with yet another mistake on the 49th minute after Odilon Kossounou cheaply gave away the ball but the goalkeeper managed to recover and make a timely save.
Anthony Martial then gave way for Odion Ighalo on the 67th minute with Solskjaer keen on going all out for the win.
Both sides could not carve out clear chances, until the 78th minute when Bonveanture played a lovely pass into Kossounou's path, but he couldn't find the target with his strike from inside the box going narrowly wide.
On the 83rd minute Bruno Fernandes, who replaced Diogo Dalot, beautifully picked out Juan Mata inside the box, but he had already moved fractionally into an offside position as the whistle went.
Fred was then fouled just outside the box on the 85th minute, presenting Bruno Fernandes with the perfect chance to win them the match but he slammed his shot into the wall.
Despite four added minutes, none of the sides could find the elusive winning goal as the match ended 1-1.
